Mental Health Month
Written By: Elaine Lopez
Mental Health Month is a campaign that has been widely recognised and celebrated in the month of October in October in New South Wales, Australia. The awareness campaign is held annually in the month of October to coincide with the World Mental Health Day on the 10th of October.
History
WayAhead - Mental Health Association NSW had been a key figure in running annual campaigns to engage the Australian community with mental health issues for over 80 years. The campaigns about mental health began in the 1950s - they were originally promoted by the Australian National Association for Mental Health. Now each state organises their own campaign and NSW continues to be the largest out of all the states.
The campaigns continue to vary from NSW Mental health Day and Week to Month which now run every October since 2010. This has been changed to a month-long due to an overwhelming increase in the number of activities that were being held by different organisations commemorating the cause. Each year has a different theme and slogan that address a different area of mental health.
Aim of the Campaign
This campaign aims to promote the importance of early intervention practices for positive mental health and wellbeing and reduce the stigma associated with mental health.
Events
WayAhead and other partners encourage communities around NSW to get involved with the campaign through organising events in their local community to promote awareness to mental health and help with their campaign. There are many events being held all across the Sydney Metropolitan area so click here to check them out.
I urge you to check out this great campaign by clicking the links below and attend any of the events that are being held around you.
